One of the more wild claims suggests that the bulbous mushroom species originated from outer space, hitching a ride on an alien spacecraft headed for earth. Others stories claim that its discovery was involved in a murder and some also believe Penis Envy is the result of mutations. Although the majority of the mycology world believes the strain was discovered by Terence McKenna.

Scientist, mycologist, author, psychonaut, and lecturer, Terence McKenna claims to have found an enormous healthy patch of magic mushrooms growing in Colombian Amazonian Rainforest. McKenna, intrigued by his finding, took spore prints of what is now believed to be of the Amazonian Cubensis variety. 

Once McKenna had returned home, he was excited to share his findings with his friend Steven Pollock. Being from the medical field, Pollock was very interested in the healing abilities of psychedelic mushrooms.

Another contributing factor to the overall difficulty of growing Penis Envy mushrooms is its vulnerability to contamination. The highly popular strain is far less resistant to contamination when compared to other strains and it also takes more than 25 percent longer to fully colonize. Pins are less frequent and it will require specific conditions for their incubation stage. Furthermore Penis Envy’s require more moisture and in addition to substrate, and a casing layer. The strain’s deficiencies and specialized needs are believed to be a result of their genetic line being chosen artificially, this strain would have never developed on its own in nature.

The phallic looking mushroom is smaller and shorter than other Psilocybe Cubensis varieties, however it makes up for its shortcomings by its density. PE’s gnarly shaped shaft and bulbous cap keeps it true to its name. Another characteristic that is unique to this mushroom is the underdeveloped cap and lack of velum (viel) separating from the cap.

The lack of velum is one of the contributing factors that makes Envy’s difficult to grow because, at times it can cause ineffective sporulation. Luckily Penis Envy mushrooms are not the same color as the real thing. Shades of light tan and sometimes dark brown are common colors of the original Penis Envy strain, although with other crossbred strains such as Albino Penis Envy, Penis Envy #6, and Penis Envy Uncut the colors may vary. PE mushrooms are known to be heavy bruisers, blue bruising can often be found on the stem. The bruising is a result of the psilocybin content, which has been tested to be more than double most other Psilocybe Cubensis strains, making them a highly desirable strain.
