The South African Transkei mushroom is originally from the former province of Transkei, in South Africa. It separates itself from other types of Psilocybe cubensis by its unique appearance and its origins.

The Transkei mushroom is the first psilocybin mushroom strain to be identified and documented from within South Africa. Other mushroom species do exist in South Africa, but this is one of the few that grows naturally there and has become popular in other parts of the world.

It was first discovered in the 2000s when it was found growing in cow dung enriched soils near the Indian Ocean.
